The Indian Muslim American Movement (IMAM) is a grassroots, nonpartisan 501(c)(3) nonprofit that partners with civil rights and human rights organizations to mobilize communities across America and advance evidence-based research, community empowerment, interfaith understanding, and public education. Led by Indian American Muslim youth, IMAM carries forward the legacy of advocacy through community organizing, civic engagement, and coalition building.

IMAM has an affiliated 501(c)(4) organization, IMAM Action, dedicated to advocacy, civic mobilization, and policy efforts.

Challenging Exclusionary Ideologies

IMAM’s work centers on documenting and addressing the impact of Hindutva 1 (a.k.a. Hindu Nationalism) and other exclusionary ideologies on minority communities in the U.S. and abroad. Hindutva-aligned actors have expanded their presence in U.S. civic, political, and community spaces through public advocacy, policy engagement, and narrative positioning. IMAM envisions a future in which such ideologies are widely understood and rejected, and in which actors advancing exclusionary, far-right ideologies are no longer normalized within the civic, cultural, or political life.

Reclaiming Indian Muslim Heritage

IMAM is dedicated to reclaiming and celebrating Indian Muslim identity, culture, and heritage. IMAM strives to carry forward the legacy of Indian Muslim freedom fighters whose faith inspired liberation for all, whose Indian identity was inseparable from their Muslim identity, and whose contributions were central to the flourishing of their communities both in India and across the diaspora.

Grounded in Research and Human Rights

IMAM’s work draws upon documented evidence from international human rights organizations, civil rights institutions, academic research, and government agencies regarding the impact of Hindutva and other exclusionary and hateful ideologies on democratic and pluralistic institutions, minority rights, and transnational repression worldwide and within diaspora communities in the United States.

IMAM strives to cultivate principled leadership committed to justice, human rights, religious freedom, and dignity for all. * Hindutva (distinct from Hinduism) is a modern political ideology associated with Hindu nationalism that advocates for Hindu supremacy and seeks to transform India – constitutionally a secular state – into an ethno-religious nation often described as a “Hindu Rashtra” (Hindu nation)
